need some advice on testing the speed of new vps hoster...is it safe to juz ping their domain name to know how fast they are, or all we need is to be given a specific ip from webhost to test to know the actual speed..and how are we do know that is e correct ip.

You can but have to admit how a server stands up to traffic is a better method of judging how well a VPS is. Google for Server stress test to find some methods and companies and sites. Do note though dropping your host an email first would be a good idea. I'm sure LEB will echo that.

Ask your provider for a test file and download it to see how fast of a speed you get.

The "speed" here would only be the network speed related to YOU from the server that hosts the test file, and might not reflect the actual VPS performance (network, CPU, IO, etc) when you actually got & purchase a low end box.

I guess with low cost VPS it is easy to go and try a few, and just cut the loss if things do not work out :P

As an IT Manager for a specialized hosting provider, I *report* anyone performing unauthorized vulnerability scans or stress tests of any of my systems - and have filed legal actions in some cases. NEVER scan or test anyone's system other than your own, or without prior written authorization to do so. These stipulations usually fall within the AUP of your ISP or VPS provider and can get you canceled quite quickly.

The goal of a good server stress test tool is to find the point where your servers stops performing effectively. As the admin of LEB can attest, that turns into a DoS attack.

Assuming you have access to a linux box already, use a combination of MTR (Matt's Traceroute) and any download test files a provider makes available. However, like @admin mentioned, that won't tell you a damn thing about the performance of the host.

kprice, you may want to review what I wrote as I suggested contacting your host before running any scan. I do webhosting as well and both I as well as our management company monitor the logs. It's a big plus that we own our routers and switches. :)

And as I noted before, a download file speed test is a rather poor method of testing a server.
