Aren't we all?

I have a VPS with buyVM - however, like many lowendboxes, they are merely purchasing from another host which leads to things like the power outage a couple days ago when BuyVM wasn't notified about some work their host was doing.

So, are their any lowendbox hosts that have been around for a while, own their own data centers, or anything else that would put them in the more reliable category even if they cost a little more or perform worse?

I'm thinking about moving some important projects to linode even though it's more per-month than I pay all year.

Hi, I'm trying to find a VPS that has the following:

- Allows multiple IPs to be purchased
- Allows IRC on their networks
- Allows self managed reverse DNS (rDNS), or allows you to specify the nameservers used for the IPs you control
- Naturally, I also want it to be stable, reasonably priced, and not disappear in a few months.

Recently, I haven't been able to find anything that meets that criteria. VPSLink used to, but they changed their control panel and no longer allow self managed rDNS. FDCServers allows you to specify the nameservers used for the IPs, but they suck and their cheapest VPS is $19.

Anyone have a recommendation?

I think the existing bbPress-based LowEndTalk is a bit long in the tooth.

Initially it is set up as a meeting place for the LowEndBox community. I picked bbPress because it's easy to set up, pretty light weight and simple in functionality. LowEndTalk has no direction nor any agenda -- basically a place for people to post random questions and occasionally providers will post new offers (or spams).

I think it needs a change.

Rather than upgrading to a better forums program (vB, phpBB, MyBB or whatever), I have been playing with OSQA recently -- a Question and Answer type site similar to StackOverflow, but (1) open sourced (2) developed in Python/Django. That suits me well as I have been developing in Python for 10 years (doing some old school stuff), and would like to pick up some Django skill as well. So I set up a new LowEndTalk site -- feel free to test out!

http://dev.lowendtalk.com/

The plan is, after a bit of testing it will become the new LowEndTalk. The old posts here will go to a different sub-domain.

Just in case you are wondering, no this is not hosted on QuickWeb's 80MB micro VPS :) I just happen to have a "spare Linode" so I am putting it on there first to test the memory usage of this Django site. Might look for a low end box later to host it :)

How do companies like this survive and pay their bills? Assuming a 8 gig box, with 512kbs customers, that would be 16 users on a box if no overselling. Assuming 8 a month, that would be $128 a month. A quick check with ev1/theplanet, I can get a bottom 8 gig xenon box for $186.50 a month.

I'm helping someone on another forum who's dealing with a database that constantly becomes corrupted. The hard drive has been checked for error and it passes. We've covered optimizing as well. Any other suggestions as to what I can point this gentleman towards? I;m at a loss as I can;t see the issue in front of me.

thanks,

Why do so many of the low end VPS providers not use redundant DNS? I have redundant DNS set up on a free web host I run. If a free host can do it, why can't a paid host do it?

Greets:

A long long time ago on an internet far far away, I got suckered into registering a hand full of Belgium domains or *.be's with eurodns. Since that day, I have grown to think of eurodns on the same level as a used car salesman.

Can anyone recommend a decent domain registrar that can handle a *.be? Please double check as many registrars don't handle the *.be's or charge a very high price for them. (For example, Godaddy charges $18.)

Just a heads up in case you haven't seen the notice. Joes DC is down.

==============================
We are currently offline due to a power issue in the building. We have staff here ready to get things back online as soon as power is restored. We have our own electricians working with the building to get the problem fixed. We should have service restored within the next few hours. A drainage sink on one of the lower floors got clogged and water backed up and leaked down the electrical closet onto one of the main power buss going through the building. The bus shorted out and the breaker in the basement flipped. Our staff was on site when it happened and contacted the building maintenance right away. We have been working with them since. A piece of the power bus was damaged and needs to be replaced and this is part of the reason why it is taking so long to get it restored.

Greets:

Not really a LEB topic but I;m sure someone can make a suggestion or two. We're looking to move our backup servers away from our current datacenter. A couple of our clients who are under ISO 9k rules are suggesting off continent like Western Europe or England.

Anyone care to suggest an established datacenter in either Western Europe or England that leases racks at the rack level? Rather not deal with a reseller of such.

Have some specific requirements but 9 times out of ten, we have to bounce this off of the sales folks to get an answer.

- At least onsite 2 electric sources.

- Both house pool uplinks as well as the ability to have dedicated uplinks. We would probably require access to one of each, at least 100mb/sec each.

- Third party access to the hardware by a UK bonded service provider. Hands on would also be a plus but would also like the ability to have "our" folks have access as well.

- Established datacenter.

- Portable IP blocks. We have our own. :)

We're looking for a full rack in the $650-$850ish range. Power and bandwidth can be extra, especially since we're looking for 2 uplinks instead of the standard one. Payment month to month with the possibility of yearly payment as well would be a plus. (We pay yearly bills in July.)

Please note that this is not a request for bids. No offer is made with this posting. No timeline is provided. Do not remove this tag. God save the queen. blah blah blah.

Just looking for suggestions as I'm sure some folks here have their own racks.

thanks,
